"Call of Duty" making killing "cool" (game)

Wisdom Quarterly
"A lie is a lie." What no one realizes until he arrives in human "hell" is that you never get this view. Half blind behind a mask, gripped by fear, taking orders, killing anything to stay alive, then spitting at anyone stupid enough to call you a "hero" if you survive crippled having served not family or country but corporations and capitalism. VIDEO ANALYSIS

Today, of course, the worst thing about "duty" is that the term is distorted to convince youth that they have a call -- to serve in glorious, murderous campaigns for corporate-government.

"It is your duty, you maggot, grunt, pansy, punk @$$ b!tch."

"Duty" has an interesting and storied history in Indian (Vedic, Buddhist, Hindu, Jain, Sikh, Sufi) history. One's dharma is one's social obligation.

(callofdutygames.org)

Unfortunately, its original spiritual significance -- as one's path to spiritual freedom -- was hijacked. It became something promoting war and accepting slavery (bound to "duties" by birth, caste, race, gender, being drafted/tricked, or factors not under our direct control).

The explanation was that this birth was under our indirect control: We caused and conditioned it (by our karma, actions past and present). There is truth in this but it neglects the fact that we have almost unbounded potential right now. The Buddha did not accept caste as any barrier. Hinduism has taken ancient Vedic-Brahmanism and continued to promote division and discrimination by birth.

If war videogames wanted to be "realistic," they would stay trapped behind foggy goggles, unable to breathe, sweating, and wondering if camouflage is used so you can pee in your pants without showing how scared you were.

It is the folly of empire to ruin countries by ruining soldier's lives. We may accept defense, but we can never accept offense (even if you rename it "preemptive" defense). Invasions are not defensive. Heading off to foreign lands to burn, rape, and pillage is not defensive. Occupying other countries is not defensive. It is folly, and it is nothing new.

The threat to us comes from the government, which no long is of, for, and by the people. Occupy public spaces to decolonize minds. War is unjust, immoral, and very profitable for corporations who pay off representative politicians.

An Old Lie
The imperial Roman poet Horace fed a lie to Roman troops long ago: Dulce et decorum est pro patria mori, or "It is sweet and right to die for country." The US Dept. of War, Pentagon, and CIA still repeat this lie to recruits without enough life experience to have learned otherwise. Videogames do an even better job of seducing children, potheads, and chubby weekend warriors.

But war poet and soldier Wilfred Owen, the greatest British poet of World War I, said it much better:

DULCE ET DECORUM EST(1)
Bent double, like old beggars under sacks,
Knock-kneed, coughing like hags, we cursed through sludge,
Till on the haunting flares(2) we turned our backs
And towards our distant rest(3) began to trudge.

Men marched asleep. Many had lost their boots
But limped on, blood-shod. All went lame; all blind;
Drunk with fatigue; deaf even to the hoots(4)
Of tired, outstripped(5) Five-Nines(6) that dropped behind.

Gas!(7) Gas! Quick, boys! -- An ecstasy of fumbling,
Fitting the clumsy helmets(8) just in time;
But someone still was yelling out and stumbling,
And flound'ring like a man in fire or lime(9)...

Dim, through the misty panes(10) and thick green light,
As under a green sea, I saw him drowning.
In all my dreams, before my helpless sight,
He plunges at me, guttering,(11) choking, drowning.

If in some smothering dreams you too could pace
Behind the wagon that we flung him in,
And watch the white eyes writhing in his face,
His hanging face, like a devil's sick of sin;

If you could hear, at every jolt, the blood
Come gargling from the froth-corrupted lungs,
Obscene as cancer, bitter as the cud(12)
Of vile, incurable sores on innocent tongues,

My friend, you would not tell with such high zest(13)
To children ardent(14) for some desperate glory,
The old Lie: Dulce et Decorum est
Pro patria mori.(15)

Sunday protest: Keystone Tar Sands Pipeline

PROTEST SUNDAY, NOV. 6, 2011 D.C. AND L.A.
Washington Post ad: Obama, say no to tyranny; reject Keystone
  • We will return to DC to encircle the White House asking Obama to reject the tar sands pipeline.
This is a call to action. It was issued by a diverse group of movement leaders. The goal is to bring together a massive rally on November 6th in Washington DC. To join the rally, sign up.

We need your help. People got out of jail in DC after two weeks of civil disobedience that led to 1,253 brave people ending up in handcuffs to stop the Keystone XL tar sands pipeline.

It was the largest such action in decades. And because of their leadership, lots has begun to happen:

The Dalai Lama and Archbishop Tutu along with seven other Nobel Peace Prize winners wrote a letter to the president asking that he block the pipeline. They acknowledged the actions of those in DC:

“These brave individuals have spoken movingly about experiencing the power of nonviolence in that time. They represent millions of people whose lives and livelihoods will be affected by construction and operation of the pipeline.”

At Pres. Obama’s first public speech since the sit-ins ended, a hardy bunch of University of Richmond students unfurled a huge banner demanding that the president veto the pipeline -- followed by similar actions in Columbus, Ohio, Raleigh North Carolina, Cambridge, Massachusetts, Wilmington, Delaware, and many others.

Meeting on the Rosebud Sioux reservation last week, Native tribal leaders from both sides of the border and private land owners from South Dakota and Nebraska signed a "Mother Earth Accord" opposing Keystone XL and the tar sands.

These are the people who started this fight, and they’re being joined by everyone right down to Nebraska Cornhusker football fans who booed lustily when a Keystone ad showed up on the Jumbotron at a recent game. The next day the university ended their sponsorship deal with Trans-Canada Pipeline.

(Amy Dewan/HuffingtonPost.com)

Even as we issue this letter, Canadian activists by the hundreds are risking arrest on Parliament Hill in Ottawa. And brave protesters are trying to block shipments of heavy equipment to Alberta from Idaho and Montana.

These are remarkable signs of continent-wide protest.

Huge wildfires driven by the worst drought in Texas history have destroyed towns and killed people; the biggest rainfalls ever recorded have done similar damage in New Jersey, New York, and Vermont. There is real momentum for action and real need.

We have less than 90 days to convince the president not to approve the pipeline. We need to keep using our creativity and bodies as a part of this struggle -- to struggle even though there is no guarantee of victory. Here’s the plan in three stages... More

Koch-Brother-Cain: "Get a Job, Hypocrites!"

Wisdom Quarterly
Those darn 99% trying to rock MY boat with their labor, student, anti-war organizing!

Sweetheart Republican candidate Herman "999" Cain rises in polls... with the help of the infamous multi-billionaire Koch Brothers, who started the AstroTurf Tea Party movement and supported Scott Walker in Madison, Wisconsin who with other Republicans destroyed the unions in spite of unprecedented protests.

When Cain, an actual Black man (unlike Dick Cheney relative B.S. Obama) yet somehow more of a sellout, was asked about the Occupy Wall Street protesters, he had something shocking to say.

State-sponsored assassin Obama -- who has signed off on drone attacks for the extrajudicial execution/assassination of numerous unindicted targets -- is at least trying to pander to both sides of Wall Street (Zuccotti Park and the Stock Exchange) as if he were a moderate. Obama's actually a conservative zealot pushing Bush-era policies while mumbling "the change we need" but in a lovable way.

Have people noticed that China took out the Panchen Lama and replaced him with a stand in just the way America took out MLK and replaced him with B.S. Obama. But he is no more the fulfillment of Martin Luther King Jr's dream than Herman Cain.

Asked about Wall Street occupiers, Cain sent them a message: "Get a job, hypocrites!" Maybe he meant he would like to hire them at Burger King and Godfather's Pizza, two places Koch-Brother-from-another-mother-Cain knows a lot about. Cain is also infamous for pointing out that "Black people are too poor" [for his taste], which he says keeps them out of the Tea Party, not racism.

Herman Cain to Wall Street protesters: Get A Job, Hypocrites
(BusinessInsider.com, Oct. 14, 2011)
Herman Cain (shown here courtesy of the Atlanta Post with Tea Bag favorite Michelle Bachmann) doubled down Friday on his statement that the Occupy Wall Street protesters should blame themselves for being poor or out of work, adding that they were also hypocrites for using corporate technology to promote their cause.

In an op-ed for the New York Post, the former Godfather's pizza CEO turned Republican presidential candidate wrote that the protesters would, "rather have a handout than work." Citing his own family as an example of how hard work can lead to financial success, Cain wrote that the protesters had no one to blame for their "failures" but themselves. More

Koch Brothers Get Rich with Secret Sales to Iran
In May 2008, a unit of Koch Industries Inc., one of the world’s largest privately held companies, sent Ludmila Egorova-Farines, its newly hired compliance officer and ethics manager, to investigate the management of a subsidiary in Arles in southern France. In less than a week, she discovered that the company had paid bribes to win contracts.

“I uncovered the practices within a few days,” Egorova-Farines says. “They were not hidden at all.” She immediately notified her supervisors in the US. A week later Wichita, Kansas-based Koch Industries dispatched an investigative team to look into her findings, Bloomberg Markets magazine reports in its November issue. More

Russian and American patriotism (video)

Joe Bendel (Libertas Film Magazine)
Russians were apparently better 1950's style all-American US patriots.

Even though he was badly hung-over, he knew there was a national crisis. Though the bleary-eyed Russian did not know at the time the hard line Communist coup had deposed Mikhail Gorbachev, he saw that Swan Lake was the only program on television. For some reason, the Soviets always broadcasted the Tchaikovsky ballet during periods of internal turmoil. It is telling details like this that connect the personal to the grandly historical in Robin Hessman’s My Perestroika, which screened earlier this year at New Directors/New Films.

A Russophile in high school, Hessman was working for LENFILM, the Soviet film agency based in what was then Leningrad, at the time of the infamous coup. Through her time working and studying in Russia, Hessman developed a keen appreciation for the stoic nobility of average Russian citizens, which is clearly reflected in Perestroika. Using five former classmates as representative everymen, Hessman subjectively presents the last 40-some years of Russian and Soviet history through their reminiscences and home movies. More

Obama Goes Republican (still can't win)

Wisdom Quarterly (ANALYSIS)
Selling out at every turn wedded to opinion polls and willing to say whatever it takes (justpolitics)

American Jobs Act (is all an act)
Today B.S. (Barry Soetoro) Obama addressed the nation to pander to what pollsters and his PR firm told him people wanted to hear, particularly Republicans. He said it -- jobs, jobs, jobs for everyone. Cut corporate taxes. Cut the deficit. Minimize government. Fix the roads. Free money for all. Raw-raw-raw, we're Number One! USA, USA, USA, USA!

Obama's speech fails to unite US... over his speech again (nymag.com).

And for all that, concession man got only yawns of disinterest from his new party. Maybe his dissemblance and mendacity have worn thin his message. No one believes it anymore... except the corporations who (s)elected him and stand to benefit the most.

He is so clearly misleading by oration, making empty promises, uttering almost the opposite of what he knows to be true, all for what? To be re(s)elected? To buoy the jobless. To stick it to the opposition? The mainstream media must have had advanced notice and have their spin-doctoring and supportive propaganda ready to go. Let the onslaught begin.

Brown nosing or white facing, Barack bows to Boehner and the Republican party even before they ask (truff pix).

[So how could we leave Iraq, Pakistan, Tajikistan, Afghanistan, Airport Security Area, or the Internet? We must extend these costly and illegal/unethical wars and fight, fight, fight. We are sure taxpayers understand. Hey, and nice that we say this right around 9/11 to keep people cowering and cooperating. Who says the CIA/Pentagon are not geniuses?]

The Cost of US war on the World

Wisdom Quarterly (ANALYSIS)
(costsofwar.org)

Even if Pres. Obama came to office promising to pull out of Afghanistan, he changed his mind. Almost immediately, he sent in more invading and occupying troops. There was more than one major surges. He recently reluctantly said he would bring a fraction of them back.
But the fact is, there are more soldiers there now than there ever have been. This will be true even if he gets around to withdrawing some a year from now as he promised. How many soldiers in the field? There are a quarter US million soldiers in Afghanistan, it is said, but that must also include Iraq, CIA boots in Libya, and elsewhere. Why are there any in Afghanistan? No one knows. The Russians were greatly interested, so interested that it became their "Vietnam."

Robert Gates, Secretary of War, before presidential award and passing the job off to CIA head (csmonitor.com)

More shocking and less well known is the sad truth that even as poorly paid, PTSD-suffering "soldiers" are withdrawn, "private contractors" are sent in. There are more boots on the ground and more entering all the time.

The same happened -- thanks to Halliburton and Blackwater and Xe and other private-corporate armies -- in Iraq. Paid mercenaries do more and cost much more than regular military service personnel.
So even if all US soldiers were brought home, the secret, publicly-funded private-war would rage on. Pres. Obama is a hypocrite, and now he's a warmonger. Gates, the former head of the Pentagon (today being his last day) was not cooperating. But Leon Panetta, former CIA chief, should do as told, using his clandestine skills to promote corporate interests sitting in his new Pentagon office.

We argue and worry about gay marriage, gay soldiers, Washington sex scandals. Meanwhile, ultra-violence plays out all over the world sponsored by US taxpayers and secret sources of money (like the lucrative illegal drug trade):
  • Libya (an illegal war, but Obama doesn't mind that)
  • Yemen
  • Egypt
  • Pakistan (those drones have to prove they were worth it)
  • Iraq (the forgotten war)
  • secret conflicts (in China, space, Saudi Arabia, Africa, Bahrain, and who can forget the war on our homeland) plus the
  • United States' longest running war ever, Afghanistan.
