Free the Slaves (video)

Wisdom Quarterly (Green Fest LA, Oct. 29, 2011), FreeTheSlaves.net
Together we can end it: 1320 19th St. NW Ste. 600, Washington, DC 20036, (202) 775-7480.

Now that Demi Moore is divorcing a philandering Ashton Kutcher, who will bring attention to child sex trafficking and the plight of underage prostitutes in the US? Who will stop the beatings of unpaid laborers? Who will get rights for domestic help treated worse than pets?

Jessica Gardiner answers questions and admires newborn. "Our mission is simple: We liberate modern slaves around the world then help them build their lives as human beings" (WQ/Seven).

Slavery goes far deeper than girls being forced to be molested to profit pimps and impoverished madams in secret brothels, who frequently trick parents into selling their children into indentured servitude or a better future -- never realizing what that means.

How to do something about it: info@freetheslaves.net

Impersonal economic forces ruin lives, but so do the very personal choices of white slavers, purchasers, money launderers, and capitalists with the next best thing to gold: free disposable labor. Most of us are "wage slaves," but at least we get wages and can act as if we were free. Imagine losing even those two perks.

Talking about an incomprehensible topic sometimes means just pointing at pictures. Gardiner grieves while producer Harold Linde fields questions (WQ/Seven).

Free The Slaves occupied a booth across from John Perkins -- the former self-described "economic hitman" for the US military-industrial complex -- at this weekend's Green Fest. Twin ghosts, beautiful young ladies with gaunt and haunted faces called attention to a taboo topic. An oversized picture book by Lisa Kristine. FTS

Piggy Bank of America caves in: No $5 fee

(mccarthysweekly-paxvobiscum.blog)

(WP) In a rare reversal, Bank of America announced today that it will drop a highly criticized fee for customers who swipe their debit cards. The bank had intended to begin charging the $5 fee next year, citing new federal regulations that it says have hurt its bottom line. But the debit charge drew a torrent of fury from customers, lawmakers, and even Pres. Obama. Faced with consumer backlash, Wells Fargo recently abandoned its own testing of a fee. Regions Bank and SunTrust have also dropped their charges. More

Sex Slavery is Kind of Sexy (video)

I. Rony (Wisdom Quarterly)

How did sex, such a lovely thing, turn into slavery, abuse, and rape? It cannot help that so many societies are hypocritical about the subject. It is taboo to even mention. We are shame for any overt sign of lust or longing, for any lack or limitation. All that hypocrisy and shaming comes back.

There is a less savory side to trying to satisfy sensual cravings.

It comes in the form of organized sex abuse. Maybe we should rethink our attitudes, mores we contribute to by participating in mainstream media images and roles. The result of ignoring the issue is not a tragedy in Thailand (the Southeast Asian hub), Hollywood, New York, Paris, London, and Amsterdam. It is a tragedy everywhere.

It's one arena where whites are in as much jeopardy as everyone else, only we do not know it. "That's something that only happens over there," we say. Where? Where our dads go on business? It may be sexy. But imagine a world where ordinary sex were sexy.

The story is best told in pictures, but words are worth...

Green Festival Los Angeles (Oct. 29-30)

GreenFestivals.org, Wisdom Quarterly

The Green Fest comes to Los Angeles this weekend. The NYC Green Festival will now be held on Earth Day weekend, April 21-22, 2012. Saving the world means going green. Gaia, Mother Nature, our planet Earth is green. Corporations are green with envy and do not mind going green when it produces that other form of green (greenbacks).

What the world needs now is sustainability, citizen gardening, permaculture farming, natural ingredients over chemicals and Monsanto monstrosities. But how? This festival is all about how. The traditions and technologies already exist, already work, already have companies behind them waiting for implementation, already sit under a booth tent waiting to be seen. Come see.

Wisdom Quarterly visited the San Francisco version and wondered why the world was still waiting. This location is within walking distance of the Occupy Los Angeles site. The fest features Amy Goodman (Democracy Now!), Medea Benjamin (Code Pink), The [formerly evil, military-industrial complex supporting] Economic Hitman, Yoga Zone, health news, and more...

Hemp Oil Heals (video)

Wisdom Quarterly, Rick Simpson, RevolutionNews.US
()

The Buddha spoke of Five Precepts as a means of avoiding suffering for ourselves, others, and society. The fifth precept is, "I undertake the precept to abstain from intoxicants." There are strains of the cannabis plant people abuse as an intoxicant.

This makes it all the more remarkable that the plant has legitimate medicinal properties. Its seed is a healthy protein and its oil is a miracle. Neither are intoxicating. Both are available at every health food store in the country. Now a mixture of the plant and its oil has been found to heal cancers and other ailments. But this is not a new discovery.

In the past doctors carried Cannabis indica (Indian hemp) in their black medical bags and used it liberally as a safe cure for treatment for many ailments. People will go on abusing this plant, just as they abuse far more toxic substances without concerning themselves about the physical and spiritual harm they are doing.

This is no reason to continue to criminalize and ignore a substance even Harvard University has to admit heals disease.

() Cannabis oil cures cancer, according to Rick Simpson.
This is the oil, protein, and fiber without the THC (healthfulpursuit.com).

What Harvard Found

(RevolutionNews.US) Researchers at Harvard tested one of the active substances in cannabis, THC, in both lab and mouse studies. They say this is the first set of experiments to show that the compound actually activates naturally produced receptors to fight off lung cancer.

The researchers suggest that THC or other designer agents that activate these receptors might be used in a targeted fashion to treat lung cancer.

Although a synthetic substitute of THC, known as Marinol, has been used as an appetite stimulant for cancer patients and other similar treatments, few studies have shown that THC might have anti-tumor activity.

The interesting part is that the only clinical trial testing THC as a treatment for cancer growth was a recently completed British pilot study. For three weeks, researchers injected standard doses of THC into mice that had been implanted with human lung cancer cells.

They found that tumors were reduced in size and weight by about 50 percent in treated animals compared to a control group. There was also about a 60 percent reduction in cancer lesions on the lungs in these mice as well as a significant reduction in protein markers associated with cancer progression. PhoenixTears.ca

(healthfulpursuit.com)

Cannabis stops cancer (Harvard). Cannabis stops breast cancer (UCSF). Cannabis grows brain cells in mice (Princeton). Cannabis is a cousin of the hemp plant.

Hemp cannot get anyone high, yet it is illegal. Hemp is illegal because it is the most useful plant in the world. Before petroleum it was recognized and used in England and the Colonies (the nascent United States) as the strongest and most versatile fuel, medicine (Cannabis indica) paper, fiber, food, shelter...

The first US flag was made of hemp, and hemp paper was used for an early draft of our constitution. But since corporations cannot patent a plant, it was systematically discredited and criminalized.

"Hemp can't get you high unless you smoke a joint the size of a telephone pole!" according to Dr. Ron Paul.

No one should get high or use a craving for intoxication as an excuse for promoting this plant. It has legitimate medical uses the chemical-medical industry does want people to have. It is time for a new American Revolution? ♥☠✿☮❀

Happy Birthday, Columbus (video)

For the World to Live "Columbus" Must Die
Russell Means, Program #MEAR003, recorded in Denver, CO on April 27, 1992
LISTEN TO AUDIO. For too many of us, for too long, the indigenous peoples of this continent have been curiosities that existed somewhere over the horizon between fantasy and reality. The popularly crafted images were of medicine men [mostly women], squaws, peace pipes, teepees, tom toms, tomahawks, war bonnets, war paint, war whoops, and war parties. The only Indians we knew were named Tonto, Geronimo, and Crazy Horse. In recent years a lot of these cliches have disappeared. The American Indian Movement has done much to break down the conventional stereotypes. AIM articulates a program of self awareness and pride. It promotes treaty and land rights and religious freedom for Native Americans.
Russell Means, an Oglala Dakota and a prominent voice in the continuing struggle for indigenous rights, is a founding member of AIM and one of its leading spokespersons. He is Chief Executive Officer of the American Indian Anti-Defamation Council, an organization which monitors anti-Indian racism in the media and politics, and has organized and lectured throughout the world.

Another's doubt, another's proof
Another's left, another's right
Another's peace, another's fight
Another's name, another's aim
Another's fall, another's fame
Another's pride, another's shame
Another's love, another's pain

Another's lies, another's truth...

Marx had an idea from the confusion of his head
Then there were a thousand more waiting to be led
The books are sold, the quotes are bought
You learn them well and then you're caught

Another's left, another's right
Another's peace, another's fight
Mussolini had ideas from the confusion of his heart
Then there were a thousand more waiting to play their part
The stage was set, the costumes worn
And another empire of destruction born
Another's name, another's aim
Another's fall, another's fame
Jung had an idea from the confusion of his dream
Then there were a thousand more waiting to be seen
You're not yourself, the theory says
But I can help, your complex pays

Another's hope, another's game
Another's loss, another's gain

Satre had an idea from the confusion of his brain
Then there were a thousand more indulging in his pain
Revelling in isolation and existential choice
Can you truly be alone when you use another's voice?

Another's lies, another's truth
Another's doubt, another's proof
The idea born in someone's mind
Is nurtured by a thousand blind
Anonymous beings, vacuous souls
Do you fear the confusion, your lack of control?
You lift your arm to write a name
So caught up in the identity game

Who do you see? Who do you watch?
Who's your leader? Which is your flock?
Who do you watch? Who do you watch?
Who's your leader? Which is your flock?
Einstein had an idea from the confusion of his knowledge
Then there were a thousand more turning to advantage
They realised that their god was dead
So they reclaimed power through the bomb instead
Anothers code, another's brain
They'll shower us all in deadly rain
Jesus had an idea from the confusion of his soul
Then there were a thousand more waiting to take control
The guilt is sold, forgiveness bought
The cross is there as your reward

Anothers love, another's pain
Anothers pride, another's shame
Do you watch at a distance from the side you have chosen?
Whose answers serve you best? Who'll save you from confusion?
Who will leave you an exit and a comfortable cover
Who will take you oh so near the edge, but never drop you over?
Who do you watch?

What "Occupy Together" wants (list)

The position of Occupy Together as edited by Wisdom Quarterly

Declaration of the Occupation of New York City
Occupylosangeles.org
As we gather together in solidarity to express a feeling of mass injustice, we must keep an eye on what brought us together. We write so that all people wronged by corporate forces of the world will know that we stand together as allies. We are here until the fairness that is already law is actually applied to banks, hedge funds, corporations, the military, and the White House. As ONE people, united, we acknowledge that:
  • The future of the human race requires the cooperation
  • Our system must protect our rights
  • If the system is corrupt, it is up to individuals to protect rights
  • A democratic government derives its (just) power from people
  • Corporations do not have our consent to extract Earth's wealth
  • No real democracy is attainable when economic power rules
We come at a time when corporations -- which place profit over people, self-interest over justice, and oppression over equality -- run our governments. We have peaceably assembled here, as is our right, to let these facts be known.

But WHY are you occupying major US cities?
  • Corporations have taken our houses through an illegal foreclosure, despite not having the original mortgage.
  • Corporations have taken bailouts from [corrupted politicians on the backs of] taxpayers with impunity, yet they continue to give their executives exorbitant bonuses.
  • Corporations have perpetuated inequality and discrimination in the workplace based on skin color, age, sex, gender identity, and sexual orientation.
  • They have poisoned the air, water, and food supply and undermined farming through monopolization.
  • They have profited from illegal torture, unjust confinement, and cruel treatment of countless nonhumans and actively hidden these practices.
  • They have stripped employees of the right to negotiate for living wages and safer working conditions.
  • They hold students hostage with tens of thousands of dollars in student loan debt, a human right provided to earlier generations.
  • They have outsourced labor and used that as leverage to cut workers’ health coverage and pay.
  • Corporations have corrupted the courts to have the same rights as people, with none of the responsibility.
  • They have spent millions on legal teams to look for ways to evade taxes and get out of health insurance contracts.
  • They have sold our privacy as a commodity.
  • They have bought and traded pollution as a commodity.
  • They have used our police and military to end freedom of the press.
  • They have deliberately declined to recall faulty products in pursuit of profits.
  • They determine economic policy, despite the catastrophic failures their policies have and continue to produce.
  • They have lined the pockets of politicians who are supposed to regulate them.
  • They HIDE and block alternate forms of energy to keep us dependent on oil, gas, plastic, war, coal, and pollution.
  • They block generic chemicals that have already reaped great profits violating patent promises.
  • They block and outlaw natural remedies, therapies, vitamins, and supplements.
  • They promote synthetic poison pharmaceuticals and tainted vaccines.
  • They purposely cover up oil spills, accidents, criminal bookkeeping, and harmful ingredients in pursuit of profit.
  • They keep us disinformed, misinformed, and fearful by control of the media.
  • They accept private contracts to murder prisoners even when presented with serious evidence of their innocence.
  • They perpetuate colonialism occupying us at home and others abroad.
  • They encourage and engage in torture and the murder of innocent civilians overseas.
  • They behave as a military-industrial EMPIRE that has little regard for US citizens.
  • Corporations create, deploy, and sell weapons of mass destruction in order to receive government contracts.*
*THESE GRIEVANCES ARE NOT AN ALL-INCLUSIVE LIST OF WHY WE ARE HERE.

As long as they don't come to DC, I don't care what they do. You won't fund my re-election? Well, these hippies have got to be dealt with with the full authority vested in my office.

People of the world,

We the New York City General Assembly occupying Wall Street in Liberty Square, urge you: Assert your power.

Exercise your right to peaceably assemble; occupy public space; create a process to address the problems we all are facing; generate solutions accessible to everyone.

To all communities that take action and form groups in the spirit of direct democracy, we offer support, documentation, and all of the resources at our disposal.

We will make our voices heard!

Nagas in the News: Man Bites Snake

Wisdom Quarterly, Family Guy, Tyra Banks Show, Reuters.com, KTLA.com

Reptilian DNA can be activated by anger (apparently).

Man Bites Python

Reuters

A Kenyan man [like yesterday's incident in California but in 2009] bit a python who wrapped him in its coils and hauled him up a tree in a struggle that lasted hours, local media said.... Farm manager Ben Nyaumbe was working at the weekend when the serpent, apparently hunting for livestock, struck in the Malindi area of Kenya's Indian Ocean coast.

(reuters.com)

"I stepped on a spongy thing on the ground and suddenly my leg was entangled with the body of a huge python," he told the Daily Nation newspaper. When the snake coiled itself round his upper body, Nyaumbe resorted to desperate measures: "I had to bite it." The python dragged him up a tree, but when it eased its grip, Nyaumbe said he was able to take a mobile phone out of his pocket and phone for help.

That makes enough sense. After all, a python is massive and was taking him up a tree to eat, reminiscent of a culturally famous story about an apple and an idyllic garden. But it hardly explains the next story of human-reptilian (naga) hybrid behavior.

Man Bites Python, Says He Has No Memory of it
SACRAMENTO, California(ktla.com) - A man is facing animal cruelty charges for biting a two-foot long python, and he says he has no memory of it. Yesterday [Sept. 2, 2011] afternoon Sacramento cops were called...

While talking to the “victim” 57-year-old David Senk, who had blood in his mouth, another witness told cops that Senk took two large bites out of a live python.... They sewed up a two-inch hole in the belly of the snake, and they found a few ribs were missing. Senk was arrested for animal cruelty.

“I did what?” asked Senk when questioned by FOX40’s Lonnie Wong and added: "If you find the owner, tell him I'm real sorry...."

The snakes owner could not be reached, and Senk says he doesn't know how he got in contact with the Python. He also admitted to not liking snakes very much. PHOTOS

Invoking the Buddha to protect the Forests

Brendan Brady (The World (PRI, August 30, 2011)

Buddhists in Cambodia are ordaining trees in order to protect the endangered forests they grow in (arcworld.org).

The young, novice monk Sar Vy says he does not need to understand the science of climate change to know that his country and its people -- as well as the wider world -- benefit from forest conservation.

[Buddhist monk] Tha Soun’s orange robe shimmers as he strolls through a patch of forest in Northern Cambodia, pointing out trees and shrubs with medicinal benefits. He gestures toward berries that he says are good for joint and muscle pain, and a beehive full of nutritious wild honey.

The Buddhist/Hindu Khmer empire, like the corresponding jungle empires of Mesoamerica, was once the largest in Asia (khmerlibrarypicture).

Tha and his fellow monks from nearby Samraong pagoda have presided over this 44-thousand acre forest known as Sorng Rukavorn, or simply Monk Forest, for a decade. These days it seems a serene garden, but it wasn’t always so.

Tha says that not long ago, police and soldiers would come here to poach timber.

“I would advise them to stop if I thought they might listen,” Tha says. “But if they wouldn’t listen, I would just take away their chainsaws and weapons.”

Tha says he and the other members of his Buddhist community have succeeded in protecting the forest because they are respected spiritual figures. But his experience before he became a monk certainly helps as well.

“The soldiers don’t scare me, because I used to be a soldier, too,” Tha says.

This determination helps preserve the forest for use by both the monks and the local community. Now, the effort could also provide lucrative for Cambodia.

Monk Forest is one of 13 community forests totaling more than 250 square miles in Odder Meanchey province whose value in fighting climate change is being marketed in an international exchange of what are called avoided deforestation carbon credits. That’s a mouthful that basically means Cambodia hopes to get paid by outsiders not to cut down their trees. More

Stay "Mindful" with Mindful.org

It was a very exciting time around the Shambhala Sun offices last year. They were preparing a special print publication called Mindful with the tag-line “Living with Awareness and Compassion.”

Mindful was a 40-page mini-magazine inserted into the December-January 2010 issue of the Shambhala Sun and also distributed across North America FREE in health food stores, bookstores, health clinics, and wherever those who seek might congregate.

Mindful, which Barry Boyce was in charge of, had short articles about mindfulness and other forms of awareness, body, and compassion practices, all written from an entirely secular viewpoint.

When the mini-mag was starting to reach people, a website was launched. It carries the latest information on bringing mindfulness, awareness, and compassion into our lives. It is updated every day with fresh stories and news.

Mindful.org offers mindfulness-based approaches to all the important issues of life today, from , , emotional well-being, , , and , to work, creativity, activism, and the that is proving its benefits. Source

Sex and the Global "Slut Walk"

Thousands of skimpily dressed women took to the streets of London in Britain's first "Slut Walk," a global phenomenon to protest sexual violence (AFP/File/Carl Court).

(AFP) Thousands of women took part in a so-called "Slut Walk" in London, insisting that they should be able to wear as much or as little as they like without facing sexual harassment by men.

The colorful march on Saturday saw most people wearing everyday clothing but some wore provocative outfits as they marched on London's central Trafalgar Square.

New Delhi schedules Slut Walk to fight India's rape crisis

Slut Walk was first held in Toronto earlier this year after a police officer caused outrage by stating that "women should avoid dressing like sluts in order not to be victimized" during a speech to university students.

The protest soon spread to cities around the world where women joined in huge numbers to challenge the mindset that victims of sexual assault should bear a degree of responsibility on the grounds that they were "asking for it," including Nicaragua where dozens of women took part in a Slut Walking protest on Saturday. America's favorite drink (liquid energy)

(detoxyourworld.com)

America, of course, is a continent, not a country. While the US empire may sway and undermine the rest of the world, it does not represent the Americas.

The Amazon jungle is an amazing (and some say created, i.e., terraformed) factory of amazing alkaloids. The world's favorite stimulants come from South American jungles and highlands: chocolate (cacao), coffee (cafe), coca (cocaine).

The favorite drink on this continent is not Coca Cola (which originally contained addictive and destructive white cane sugar and habit-forming coca leaves chewed in the Peruvian Andes for energy). Now chemical-corn-glucose-and-formaldehyde-with-methyl-alcohol (which is what aspartame breaks down into) laden soda may be consumed corroding plastic and aluminum containers, yet it is not the favored drink.

Coffee may have conquered the world with detrimetal health consequences that are repeatedly obscured by "new scientific findings" to suggest rancid, roasted seeds could possibly be a good idea to consume even in small quantities.

The continental favorite is Guayaki, known everywhere as Yerba Mate (Ilex paraguariensis) a subtropical species of Holly.

According to ABC, Yerba Mate is now being marketed in the US as an energy-boosting diet tea. It contains various minerals, including phosphorous, iron, calcium, and vitamins C, B1, and B2. But it also contains caffeine (and, in limited amounts, theophylline and theobromine), which are all stimulants.

Some manufacturers of Yerba Mate say their brands contain a caffeinelike substance that makes one less jittery called "mateine." But it seems that chemically, it is identical to caffeine. The bottom line: It provides a hit of energy, but that hit is due to caffeine.

Warning: Research has found chronic consumption of this tea over years may increase the risk of head and neck cancers [although Argentinians, Brazilians, and others disagree]. Source

Let them In: How Brazilians Could Help the U.S. Economy
(TIME.com) Everyone should love Brazilian tourists. They spend more per capita than any other nationality. Worldwide, Brazilian tourists shell out an average of $43.3 million a day, dropping a gigantesco $1.4 billion last April alone, up 83% from the same period last year, according to the Brazil's Central Bank. In 2010, 1.2 million Brazilians visited the United States, injecting $5.9 billion into the U.S. economy. Even exclusive ski resorts in Vermont are scrambling to hire Portuguese-speaking ski instructors to meet the unexpected and rapidly growing demand from thousands of adventurous Brazilians...
