Real "magic" explained in Buddhism (video)

Wisdom Quarterly
Other than jhana mastery in this or a previous life, what could explain this mystery?

"Meditative absorptions" (jhanas) are one way to marvels and magical powers (that are dangerous due to hidden pitfalls). Buddhaghosa's Path of Purification describes the method. Once the absorptions are developed, the adept amy then choose to develop the five supernormal powers (abhinnas or siddhis) of Indian lore.

  • Divine Eye (dibba cakkhu) - clairvoyance or the ability to see earthly and celestial at a distance and unseen by the physical eyes. Cutupapatanana is knowing and seeing the passing away and reappearing of beings. Anagatainsanana is seeing the [probable] future. Yathakammupagatanana is knowledge and vision of beings cycling in accordance with their karma.
  • Divine Ear (dibba sotta) - clairaudience or the power to hear ordinary sounds at a distance as well as subtle (unearthly) sounds from beyond.
  • Recollection of Past Lives (pubenivasanusattuna) - reviewing one's own and others' rebirths.
  • Mind Reading (paracitta vijanana) - directly knowing one's heart/mind.
  • Psychic Powers (iddhividha, iddhis, or siddhis) - such as flying through the air, walking on water like earth, plunging into earth like water...

These abilities may be used skillfully but are much more likely to seduce one and lead to utter ruin. Even the Buddha, seeing danger in them, was reluctant to use them. Arhats, who do not necessarily have them, do not make public displays of them. It is possible to attain enlightenment without mastering these powers. Some say it is possible to awaken without the aid of the absorptions (jhanas) through the very difficult "dry insight" method, which it is said makes use of vipassana-jhanas (most likely access or neighborhood concentration).

Spiritual Autism?

Wisdom Quarterly
(StoryCorps)

Autism spectrum disorders (ASD) are widespread and increasing exponentially. [They are almost certainly caused by toxic load, usually consisting of unmanageable heavy metals, from the environmental in general and vaccinations (excipients) in particular.]

The shadow government does it on purpose while ordinary government outlets scramble to deny, dismiss, and discredit claims that anything it is involved in could be causing harm to citizens. This has made the use of vaccine in children an enormous controversy. The CIA's recent abuse of vaccinations to secretly target and kill Pakistani suspects.

Most victims have Asperger's, a potentially mild form of introversion. Autism means auto-ism or overly focusing on the self to the exclusion of the social environment. It is seen in children, particularly after massive doses of vaccinations have been administered for convenience and profit without informing parents of the danger of combining many useful and useless vaccinations, particularly live strains. (Vaccination may be a wonderful thing, but things added to them like thiomersal are extremely toxic).
  • Epidemiological reviews estimate a rate of one to two cases per 1,000 people for autism, and about six per 1,000 for autism spectrum disorders.[Ref] This may be a gross underestimate of ASD's true prevalence.[Ref] ASD averages a 4.3:1 male-to-female ratio. The number of children known to have autism has increased dramatically since the 1980s.
Mild autism and neuroticism may in fact help one's practice of the spiritual path. The temporary social isolation, withdrawal, seclusion, and intense focus is certainly made easier.

We know of a female with apparent Asperger's who used this condition to her advantage in college (excelling in academic activities requiring intense focus and abstract conceptualization) and meditation. She was able to ride her ability to focus and her aversion to social situations to the mastery of the meditative-absorptions (jhanas), insight-practices (vipassana), and initial stages of enlightenment (stream entry). She is now free in the most profound sense of the word. And it both gives hope to those living with autism (which is actually curable through intense chelation if promptly undertaken by an experienced alternative healing practitioner) and an indication to everyone's practice: Intense focus and setting everything else aside is the way to sudden progress; thereafter, one reintegrates into life. Unfortunately, most of us are taught that the path of enlightenment is ordinary life, for which there is no textual support. Ordinary people do not become enlightened by leading an ordinary life; however, people who become enlightened may very well lead ordinary lives. Ancient texts illustrate this again and again. Modern teachers misrepresent the path again and again, as if to please audiences who crave something out of the ordinary or who on the verge of practicing in accordance with the historical Buddha's teachings.

Autism is being diagnosed through speech (gossipjackal.com).

Autism and Humanity
OnBeing.org (July 14, 2011)
One child in every 110 in the U.S. is now diagnosed to be somewhere on the spectrum of autism. We step back from public controversies over causes and cures and explore the mystery and meaning of autism in one family's life, and in history and society. Our guests say that life with their child with autism has deepened their understanding of human nature -- of disability, and of creativity, intelligence, and accomplishment. More

The Path to Freedom (explained)

Wisdom Quarterly based on original translation by Bhikkhu Bodhi (SN 45:8; V 8-10)

“Disciples, I will teach you the Noble Eightfold Path and analyze it for you. Listen and attend closely as I speak.” “Yes, venerable sir,” they replied. The Buddha then said:

“And what, disciples, is the Noble Eightfold Path? Right view, right intention, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, and right concentration.

I. “What is right view? Knowledge of disappointment, knowledge of its origin, knowledge of its cessation, knowledge of the path leading to its cessation. This is right view.

II. “What is right intention? Intentions of renunciation, non-ill will, and harmlessness [These are antidotes for two of the Three Poisons, namely, greed, hatred, and delusion. The instant antidote to delusion is mindfulness, which does not involve thinking, judging, or evaluating but unelaborated awareness]: This is called right intention.

III. “What is right speech? Abstaining from false speech* [bearing false witness, perjury, bias favoritism], abstaining from malicious speech, abstaining from harsh speech, abstaining from useless speech. This is called right speech.

IV. “What is right action? Abstaining from the depriving beings of life, abstaining from taking what is not given, abstaining from sexual-misconduct**: This is called right action.

V. “What is right livelihood? Here a noble disciple, having abandoned a wrong mode of livelihood, earns a living by some honest means. [At a minimum this involves abstaining from five kinds of business: trade in weapons, human trafficking, butchering or transporting animals for slaughter, drugs, or poisons. It also means avoiding any profit making activity that means breaking any of the Five Precepts.] This is called right livelihood.

VI. “What is right effort? Here [in this Dharma] one generates zeal for the non-arising of unarisen unwholesome states; one makes effort, rouses energy, applies mind/heart, and strives. One generates zeal for abandoning unwholesome states that have arisen....generates zeal for the arising of wholesome states that have not yet arisen.... One generates zeal for the continuation of arisen wholesome states, for their non-decline, increase, expansion, and fulfillment by development. One makes an effort, rouses energy, applies mind/heart, and strives. This is called right effort.

VII. “What is right mindfulness? Here, one dwells examining [not "thinking" about or evaluating] the body in the body, ardent, clearly comprehending, mindful, having removed longing and dejection with regard to the world. One dwells examining sensations in sensations [pleasant, neutral, or unpleasant], ardent, clearly comprehending, mindful, having removed longing and dejection with regard to the world. One dwells examining mind in mind: clearly comprehending, mindful, having removed longing and dejection with regard to the world. One dwells contemplating phenomena in phenomena [defined specifically in the discourse on setting up the Four Foundations of Mindfulness], ardent, clearly comprehending, mindful, having removed longing and dejection with regard to the world. This is called right mindfulness.

VIII. “What is right concentration [samadhi]? Here, secluded [withdrawn, aloof, apart] from sensual pleasures, secluded from unwholesome states of mind, a meditator enters into and dwells in the first absorption, which is accompanied by applied and sustained attention, with rapture and happiness born of seclusion [turning the mind/heart inward]. With the subsiding of applied and sustained attention, one enters and dwells in the second absorption, which has internal confidence and unification of mind, is without [the continuous effort of] applied and sustained attention, and has rapture born of concentration. With the fading away as well of rapture, one dwells equanimous and, mindful and clearly comprehending, one experiences happiness with the body; one enters and dwells in the third absorption of which the Noble Ones [those who have achieved any of the stages of enlightenment] declare: ‘One is equanimous who dwells happily.’ With the abandoning of pleasure and pain, and with the previous passing away of joy and dejection, one enters and dwells in the fourth absorption, which is neither painful nor pleasant and includes the purification of mindfulness by equanimity. This is called right concentration” (SN 45:8; V 8-10).

*FALSE SPEECH: When summoned to a court, meeting, or by relatives, a guild, rulers [administrators] and questioned as a witness in this way: "Tell what you know," then not knowing one says, "I know," or knowing one says, "I do not know," not having seen one says, "I saw," or having seen one says, "I did not see"; in full awareness one speaks falsehoods for one's own gain, for another's gain, or for some trivial material end). The same applies to encouraging others to lie (Numerical Discourses, Tens, sutra 206 or AN X.206).

**SEXUAL MISCONDUCT: "Sexual intercourse with those protected by mother, father, parents, brother, sister, relatives, spouse, the law, or with those engaged, or promised in youth. The same applies to encouraging others to engage in misconduct" (AN X.206).

Buddhist Physics: particles change "flavor"

Seven Dharmachari (Wisdom Quarterly), LiveScience.com
The MINOS neutrino experiment is located in a cavern half a mile deep in the Soudan Underground Lab, Minnesota. (Yet people doubt there are DUMBs in the US). A mural of famous scientists is painted onto the rock wall (Fermilab).

Buddhist Physics made visible
It shocked me that at a meditation retreat, the revered monk and scholar was explaining how particles-of-perception could literally be observed. The mind purified and intensified through absorption- (jhana) and honed by insight- (vipassana) practice became able to perceive the smallest particles in Buddhist physics.

I had always thought these things theoretical and, although terribly interesting, beside the point. But they were the point. To gain enlightenment, one would have to examine and analyze these ephemeral objects. The purpose of doing so is direct realization that "everything that is of a nature to arise is of a nature to pass away." This is the teaching of radical impermanence.

It is not that eventually things crumble; rather in every moment in every way, things are changing and transforming.

One startling aspect of this teacher (Pa Auk Sayadaw)'s instruction, derived from the Abhidharma and Path of Purification, was the notion that particles-of-perception had "flavor" and "odor." This went against everything I understood about such gross physical phenomena. But had I known then as I know now that ordinary meditators in attendance were seeing them, were enjoying absorption and gaining liberating insight, I should have been much more amazed at that.

What is invisible and transient will become visible through practice. It will not, however, become any less transient. So how in the world will the mind/heart ever see a subatomic particle? The answer is easy to understand, hard to accomplish. The mind perceives it and, like a photograph, lays down a memory trace. That trace can be reviewed even if what it is a trace of happened so incredibly quickly as to be incomprehensible.

Stanford Univ., Los Alamos National Lab (particleadventure.org/KarlTate/LiveScience)

Seeing the transition (anicca, transition or flux), instability (dukkha, disappointment or unsatisfactoriness), and composite nature (anatta, impersonality or emptiness) first hand is what liberates the heart/mind from clinging to things as if they are real, able to yield satisfaction or able to be possessed.

If the mind/heart (other more subtle particles called cittas, the elements or moments of consciousness in Buddhist psychology) sees the "true nature" of things, it withdraws. It naturally lets go. And unbound, unentangled, detached from them, it is freed just for an instant.

But that instant is enough to undo the hold of samsara, this clinging to self, suffering, and rebirth -- giving way to the first stage of enlightenment (stream entry), the gateway, the all important noble attainment. Imagine what surprise, then, to hear science use the term "flavor" to describe the transitory nature of these same unbelievably small and short lived particles! Here's the story LiveScience.com:

Exotic Particle Changes Flavor as Scientists Watch
Scientists have observed the rare phenomenon of one type of exotic particle transforming into another, which could reveal secrets about the evolution of the universe.

The particles are two types of chargeless, nearly massless species called neutrinos, which come in three flavors: muon, electron, and tau. In past experiments, physicists have measured the change of muon neutrinos to tau neutrinos and electron neutrinos to muon or tau neutrinos. But no one has definitively seen muon neutrinos turn into electron neutrinos.

Now two separate experiments -- one in Japan and one in Minnesota -- have both found evidence for this transformation as well. More

Psychic Phenomena Today (abhinna)

Wisdom Quarterly

What the West has labelled psychokinesis, ESP, or paranormal activity has a long history in Buddhism and India. Hinduism calls these natural powers, dormant in the vast majority of people, siddhis. Buddhism refers to them as abhinna (abhijñā, abhiññā) or "higher knowledges." They are rooted in meditative absorptions ("right concentration" or samma samadhi) either developed in this life or in past lives. The karmic ability manifests as a natural inclination or ability, which leads us to conclude that "either you're born with it or you're not." No one is "born" with it, as such. Everyone develops it. But having developed it in the past, it may manifest spontaneously. Then it will be misconstrued as having no cause, that is, something someone is simply born with for no reason. Whereas there are many stories of such things in Buddhist texts, Katie presents a modern case of paranormal powers:

The Gold Leaf Lady

and Other Parapsychological Investigations

Prof. Stephen E. Braude, Univ. of Maryland

Katie, the Gold Leaf Lady

I was seated across a table from a woman, no more than three feet away. And while we were talking, a small piece of gold-colored foil appeared suddenly on her face. I knew that her hands were nowhere near her face when this happened. In fact, I was certain they were in full view on the table the entire time. I knew also that if her husband, seated next to her, had placed the material on her face, I would have seen it clearly. But nobody’s hands had been anywhere near her face. So I knew that the material hadn’t been placed there; it appeared there, evidently without normal assistance.

This was one of several similar incidents that occurred during my most fascinating paranormal investigation: the case of a woman much of whose body -- not just parts of her face -- would break out in what looked like gold leaf. But first, some background. We need to be clear about just how unusual and potentially important this case is.

Parapsychologists study several interesting phenomena, but they focus primarily on the evidence for extrasensory perception (ESP), psychokinesis (PK), and survival of bodily death. Of course, many consider all of these incredible and unworthy of serious attention. Others agree that they’re extraordinary, but believe they’re both possible and worth studying. And still others consider at least some of the phenomena to be natural and part of everyday life. In fact, many would say ESP is merely a form of intuition and leave the matter there. More
