Thank goodness for Veterans for Peace. Today is Veterans Day, a day set aside to remember the sacrifices families have and are making to promote free trade, hegemony, and imperial rule.

I remember a time on deployment. The troops in Iraq were tired of sitting around. They were tired of hearing peacenikshippy diplomats say, "Give peace a chance." We really thought there were WMDs (weapons of mass destruction). We were lied to.

The fresh meat, rushed through training, were fond of saying: "Give war a chance." They really thought it was funny. I thought it was funny. Listening to metal There is an OG punk song that goes, "Let's have a war so you can go die."

It's about dying for stupid reasons. Colin Powell rewriting reports, Bush doing everything Cheney ordered him to, Ashcroft singing, Rumsfeld talking so much [nonsense] and no one calling him on it. Condoleeza Rice, Madeleine Albright, Phyllis Schafly, Laura Bush, the women were no better.

What do we call those who delight in war, "demons"?

War was desirable and planned for in great detail before inventing a reason to illegally starting to bomb with no congressional declaration. An unelected president signs the country up for an unwanted war...and we're still there. His father's friends told him to.

Raping, drinking, looting, pillaging, killing, all in a day's work.

Fear, Fear, Live in Fear! "Contagion" (film)

"Nothing spreads like fear" -- Number One in the American box office. "Don't talk to anyone, don't touch anyone, stay away from other people," a mom cautions her child.

As one of the mental poisons, fear (bhava) is a kind of hate (dosa) in Buddhism. Both are forms of aversion. Aversion is a negative state that leads to unwholesome karma -- in thought, word, and deed. It is contagious. The military-industrial complex has a propaganda arm, the entertainment industry, and would like us to feel aversion. Why would Hollywood help fear- and warmongers?

Money helps, as does government regulation, private inducement. But privilege locks the cooperation in. Behind-the-scenes Hollywood has always been part of the problem (think of the 1950 "let's fear the alien invaders" craze) even if liberal actors are disproportionately covered by the media.

Fear cripples the immune system. This movie spreads fear and is becoming famous for laughs exulting in hating Gwyneth Paltrow.



"Swine flu" was released on purpose; the goal of the mainstream media was to keep people afraid -- in that way they not only accepted toxic, immune-weakening flu shots, they first begged and then demanded them. Those shots were no protection (as microbes evolve quickly). Vaccines build immunity, but additives (excipients) and multiple shots at once cause great harm. The heavy metal load alone causes more injury than over hyped flu strains.

Shots are particularly harmful to children and the elderly. Who is trying to injure/eradicate the most vulnerable? Big Pharma does not plan eradication campaigns; they just go along with them for profit, even if most employees are good, well motivated people who have no idea what their multinational corporation is motivated by.

There is a "shadowy government" that is neither elected nor directly dependent on Americans for funding. It appears to be multinational, elitist, and answering to another shot caller besides the Pentagon, CIA, NSA, NSC, and Homeland Security. But it has help from these agencies. The bottom line is that FEAR is a hindrance, a poison, a crippler of mind and body. And this movie does as much to promote and exploit our fear/hate as any organic contagion.

Demonizing the Chinese

Contagion is yet another film that glorifies us (the Occidental) while demonizing China and the Chinese (the "Oriental"). In the US-centric universe created by this movie, the source of the problem is China. (Everything bad comes from there.) And the only country working overtime to do anything about it is the USA and its CDC.

The movie depicts China as a helpless bystander providing no assistance. Everything Chinese is cast in a negative light. A group of Chinese is shown kidnapping a World Health Organization health official because, of course, the Han Chinese government does care about Han citizens. In contrast, a sympathetic Caucasian later tries to rescue poor, helpless Chinese kids despite her kidnapping. It is ridiculous and racist; what about history?

If the directors are making a comparison to SARS, they are twisting the facts. Many Chinese and other Asian doctors and nurses in Hong Kong, China, and Singapore died and suffered every day while saving lives. As a doctor who worked in a SARS-infected hospital, I remember the risks and tragedy of friends and colleagues who died and suffered respiratory distress in 2003 after the first case was found around Nov., 2002.

Although Chinese health officials at best initially underestimated the threat with their inadequate (developing world) healthcare or, at worst, covered it up, they managed to contain the disease by July, 2003. The Chinese developed the first SARS vaccine to control this disease (CNN). This movie is insulting to Asians. – Vic, Singapore

And, guys, stop clapping at Gwyneth Paltrow's death scene. Cut her some slack; she's had a hard life -- her godfather is Steven Spielberg and she's married to that bad boy rockstar from Coldplay (who is not gay). Do yoga with her or read GOOP.com instead.

Transforming the Three Poisons:
Passion, Aversion, and Delusion

In Buddhist teachings, greed, hatred (often expressed as fear), and delusion are called the "Three Poisons," the three unwholesome roots, and the three fires. These metaphors suggest how dangerous afflicted thoughts and emotions can be if they are not understood and transformed.

• Greed refers to craving, selfishness, lust, misplaced desire, attachment, and grasping for happiness and satisfaction outside of ourselves.
  
• Hatred refers to our aversion, anger, fear, and revulsion toward unpleasant people, germs, circumstances, and even toward our own uncomfortable feelings.
  
• Delusion refers to our dullness, bewilderment, and confusion, our wrong views of reality.

The poisons are byproducts of ignorance and self-view -- ignorance of our true nature, the awakened heart of wisdom and compassion. Arising out of craving and ignorance, these poisonous states of mind/heart motivate unprofitable, unskillful thoughts, speech, and actions. This brings all manner of suffering and unhappiness for ourselves and others and the world. But there are antidotes to these self-made prisons. More

(YourSupremeBeing) August 24, 2011 - Using biblical passages, Rabbi Yehuda Levin tries to blame east coast earthquakes (Virginia, DC, New York City and Haiti, Dominican Republic) on God's wrath against homosexuals and gay marriage.



Using this logic, one could show that God hates Jews even more than he hates homosexuals. In actuality, God does not hate anybody. Maybe Rabbi Yehuda Levin does. But he notes that he does not dislike gay people. And he is not the only one to read Judeo-Christian scripture in this way.



The New York rabbi claims gay marriage and the earthquake that shook the East Coast last Tuesday are directly connected. In a video uploaded to YouTube (and soon taken down as "hate speech"), Levin says gay rights legislation, like the gay marriage law passed in New York, are responsible for earthquakes, like the one that just struck Virginia/Washington, D.C.



"The Talmud states, 'You have shaken your male member in a place where it doesn't belong. I, too, will shake the Earth,'" Levin says. "We don't hate homosexuals," he says. "I feel bad for homosexuals. It's a revolt against God and, literally, there's hell to pay."

Neo-Nazi father murder: Did a violent life lead to a violent death at the hands of his 10-year-old?

(SCPR.org) For the next month, psychiatrists will evaluate a 10-year-old Riverside, California boy accused of murdering his neo-Nazi father.

Authorities say the young boy confessed to the killing during an interview with detectives.

The father was Jeff Hall, the leader of a local white supremacist group. His son had been steeped in his violent, neo-Nazi rhetoric. But there could have been a more basic motive: an attempt to stop beatings in the Hall home.

Authorities say that early on May 1, the boy took a loaded revolver from his parents’ bedroom, crept downstairs where his father was dozing on a sofa, and fired a single shot that killed him.

Court documents say the boy told a detective that he shot his dad to stop him from beating him and his stepmother.

“When we’re talking about a juvenile, especially one that is this young, we take into account the understanding that a 10-year old may not have the same ability to comprehend what his actions have done than an 18-year-old and so forth," said Riverside County prosecutor Ambrosio Rodriguez.

The boy had been thrown out of public school, apparently for his violent tendencies. Those tendencies, and the murder, might be the product of the father’s violent lifestyle. Jeff Hall led the West Coast chapter of the National Socialist Movement, an international neo-Nazi group, and Rodriguez expects the group's hate-filled cause to be part of the case. More

Hating Osama only begets hate (MLK quote)

Put away the blood lust fists, pack the flags of nationalism. All life is precious, and a life has been taken. That loss makes the heart heavy. Those who call for hate suffer in fear.

Martin Luther King Jr. followed the example of Gandhi, who followed the example of Jesus and the Buddha centuries before Christ. The Buddha taught in the "The Imprints of the Dharma" (Dhammapada) that hate always begets hate. Only love conquers hate. This is a timeless truth.

The word hate is a translation of a much broader Buddhist term. Whereas in English hate refers exclusively to passionate anger, in Buddhism the term spans the entire range from slight annoyance to enduring resentment to violent wrath. Counterintuitively, it includes fear. In fear we kill, not out of bravery. Hate is an all-around terrible thing to cultivate.


Jessica Dovey recently became Internet-famous yesterday for confounding two quotes, her own and MLK's. She wisely said:

• “I mourn the loss of thousands of precious lives, but I will not rejoice in the death of one, not even an enemy.”

This, of course, is not the only thing the Buddha had to say about "hate." Hatred, or dosa in the exclusively Buddhist language Pali, is one of the three poisons that corrupt the heart/mind. Along with craving and delusion, hatred is sometimes compared to the flaring up of fire, craving to smoldering embers, and delusion to smoke.

Actions motivated by any of these three roots are invariably unskillful, unprofitable, unwholesome karma.

"Actions" (karma) may simply be mental. They may grow into words. They find their ultimate expression in deeds. Even when they remain as thoughts or impulses, they have volition and condition an unpleasant, unwelcome result.

To march in support of killing, to delight in the death of someone, to call for the death of someone, or to rejoice in that death -- all of these are unskillful acts that ripen in suffering for the doer. They are doubly harmful when they become verbal or physical because they then are influencing others to hate. By love alone does hate subside. There is no need to "drive out" darkness; it is enough to bring in light.


MLK was echoing these sentiments when he eloquently stated in the stirring voice of a Southern preacher:

• "Returning hate for hate multiplies hate, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars. Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that. Hate multiplies hate, violence multiplies violence, and toughness multiplies toughness in a descending spiral of destruction…. The chain reaction of evil -- hate begetting hate, wars producing more wars -- must be broken, or we shall be plunged into the dark abyss of annihilation."

The Karma
Staged gathering to incense Muslims around the world (like burning a Koran, making sure Afghans know it and riot about it to justify a subsequent backlash against them) or the youthful and spontaneous bad karma of schadenfreude masked as "patriotism"? To delight in killing or to call for killing means one approves of it. This is the mental and verbal karma of "taking the lives of living beings." Almost as bad is the delusion that killing is a solution and does not cause retaliation by those insulted.

Thankfully, this is all over, right? We can now all live in peace!

Except that Osama bin Laden was killed long ago, according to Pakistan's assassinated leader, not in a US drone strike like many others but in a plot and coup attempt. It was never Christians against Muslims, so there are no hard feelings, right? Killing solves problems, right? Hanging Saddam Hussein. Murdering Gaddafi's children.

Pres. Obama knew of this before the comedic press dinner yesterday. Why would he plan to break the news late on a Sunday night in Washington, D.C.? It is morning in the Arab world. Is it an act of provocation on the part of the US military? An odd choice for an exquisitely organized public relations-savvy administration.

Because we go to war for oil -- to serve multinational energy companies, the "industrial" in military-industrial complex -- Yemen will be brought down then Saudi Arabia.

That is not the way one would predict. It was revealed by a corporate insider. An oil executive revealed that the goal is to bring gas prices up to a pre-planned level.

Egypt's leader did not step down, but was told to stand down. And when he refused, reneging on an agreement, he was taken down through illness and is now being held for trial (in a kangaroo court of sorts).

Yemen's leader agreed to step down. But when he reneged and said he would rather call out the police state military to kill protesters if necessary, he will be deposed by the US through subterfuge and force. Naturally, if things were as they are reported, one would not think that Saudi Arabia was in line for upheaval.
