Agitation and Ahimsa (video)

Sanjiv Kakar (Times of India), OccupyWallStreet.org, Wisdom Quarterly, Feminist.com
Ahimsa means harmony, non-violence, non-harming. Police are not familiar with it.

Today we see tens of thousands of citizens, including many youths, taking to the streets for a better tomorrow. In a country with a sizable youth population, having youngsters at the forefront of political agitation is not surprising.

Let movements remain nonviolent. For violence always ends in failure. It is truth that wins out in the end because, like the sun hidden by clouds, it will shine before long.

The spectacle of families bringing their children to Anna Hazare's fast at the Ramlila Maidan in Delhi for a dose of morality and [divine] ethics raises fundamental questions. What is it that we can do to establish ahimsa in our youth? Since protest is here to stay as a vital tool in the political arena, education in non-violence becomes a priority. More

Top 10 Prophecies

Listverse.com

A 5th century ascetic monk, who was a disciple of St. John Chrysostom (a doctor of the Church), made a prophecy:

After the year 1900, toward the middle of the 20th century, the people of that time will become unrecognizable. When the time for the Advent of the Antichrist approaches, people’s minds will grow cloudy from carnal passions, and dishonor and lawlessness will grow stronger. Then the world will become unrecognizable. [...]

People’s appearances will change, and it will be impossible to distinguish men from women due to their shamelessness in dress and style of hair. [...] At that time the morals and traditions of Christians and of the Church will change. People will abandon modesty, and dissipation will reign. Falsehood and greed will attain great proportions, and woe to those who pile up treasures.

Lust, adultery, homosexuality, secret deeds and murder will rule in society. [...] At that time men will also fly through the air like birds and descend to the bottom of the sea like fish. And when they have achieved all this, these unhappy people will spend their lives in comfort without knowing, poor souls, that it is deceit of the Antichrist… More

Baba Vanga was a blind Bulgarian woman (born 1911, died 1996) who was a herbalist and alleged mystic who made many predictions for the future. She became incredibly popular due to her so-called mystical powers.

When she died huge crowds attended her funeral. Among her many predictions she claimed that by 4599 man would achieve immortality and that less than 100 years later we would begin assimilating with the aliens we meet on the hundreds of planets we will have populated.

She claimed that in 4509 man will become sufficiently developed that he will begin to communicate with God directly.

In 2221, while searching for extraterrestrial life man will come into contact with something truly terrible (though she did not state what).

Closer to our own time she predicted a change in the Earth’s orbit in 2023. Curiously she predicted the beginning of World War III in 2010, which does not obviously appear to have happened -- though her followers say the machinations may be in place for this to happen.

Alois Irlmaier WW III: “Everything calls peace. Shalom! Then it will occur -- a new Middle East war suddenly flares up, big naval forces are facing hostility in the Mediterranean -- the situation is strained.

"But the actual firing spark is set on fire in the Balkans: I see a ‘large one’ falling, a bloody dagger lies beside him -- then impact is on impact. Two men kill a third high-ranked. They were paid by other people. One of the murderers is a small black man, the other a little bit taller, with bright-colored hair. I think it will be at the Balkans, but I cannot say it exactly. [...]

"Immediately the revenge comes from across the large water. However the yellow dragon invades in Alaska and Canada at the same time. But he comes not far. And then it rains a yellow dust in a line. When the golden city is destroyed, it begins…” Most interesting in these predictions is the fact that he believes the war will begin in the Middle East... More

“Understanding Virtue” Cal Tech lectures

Virtue (arete, "excellence") personified as a goddess. The most articulated value in Greek culture is areté. The word means something closer to "being the best you can be" or "reaching your highest human potential" (Wikipedia/Celsus Library, Turkey).

Fuller, Caltech lecture series “Understanding Virtue”
What causes a person to do “good”? To act kindly, generously, heroically? Does special brain activity contribute to virtuous behavior in some people?

Fuller Seminary's Travis Research Institute and CalTech are partnering in a two-day lecture series to better understand the mysteries and nature of virtue through the twin lenses of neuroscience and philosophy.
  • Talk: “Why Habit Matters: The Bodily Character of the Virtues"
  • Prof. Stanley Hauerwas, Duke Divinity School
  • Thursday, May 19, 7:30-9:30 pm
  • Pasadena Presbyterian Church
Dr. Hauerwas holds a joint appointment in Duke's Law School and Divinity School, is a noted ethicist, peacemaker, and writer, and was named "America's Best Theologian" by Time Magazine in 2001.

CalTech Prof. Steven R. Quartz (Philosophy), leader of the Brain, Mind and Society Ph.D. Program will respond, drawing on his research on fundamental problems of the mind -- how the mind emerges from the developing brain and how we make decisions, including those with moral dimensions.
  • Talk: "The Vicarious Brain: The Neural Basis of Empathy, Learning by Observation, and Sociopathy"
  • Prof. Christian Keysers (Social Brain, Univ. of Groningen, Netherlands)
  • Friday, May 20, 7:30-9:30 pm
  • Beckman Auditorium on the CalTech campus
Dr. Keysers will describe how vicarious brain activity is strong in empathic individuals and reduced in sociopaths, suggesting that vicarious brain activity plays a role in the normal development of virtue.

Prof. Nancey Murphy (Christian Philosophy, Fuller Seminary) will respond, speaking from her research on the relationships between theology, neuroscience, and philosophy of the mind.
  • FREE lectures, open to the public, are part of a major conference funded by a grant from the John Templeton Foundation. The conference brings together scientists, philosophers, ethicists, and theologians for a discussion of interdisciplinary perspectives on the neuroscience of moral action.
Pasadena Presbyterian Church: 585 E. Colorado Blvd., Pasadena 91101
CalTech’s Beckman Auditorium: 332 S. Michigan Ave. (south of Del Mar), Pasadena 91106.

"The Power of Nightmares" (watch free)

The myth of the monster Osama bin Laden is constructed; here's why.

() "The Power of Nightmares: The Rise of the Politics of Fear" is a three-part BBC documentary film written and produced by Adam Curtis.

The films in the series compare the rise of our Neo-Conservative movement in the United States and the supposed "radical Islamist" movement around the world, making comparisons on their origins and claiming similarities between the two.

More controversially, it argues that the threat of radical Islamism -- as a massive, sinister organized force of destruction, specifically taking the form of al-Qaeda -- is a myth.

It is perpetrated by politicians in many countries -- particularly American Neo-Conservatives -- in an attempt to unite and inspire their populations to follow the failure of earlier, more Utopian ideologies.

Part 1: Baby It's Cold Outside
The first part of the series explains the origin of Islamism and Neo-Conservatism. It shows Egyptian civil servant Sayyid Qutb, depicted as the founder of modern Islamist thought, visiting the U.S. to learn about the education system, but becoming disgusted with what he saw as a corruption of morals and virtues in Western society through individualism.

When he returns to Egypt, he is disturbed by westernization under Gamal Abdel Nasser and becomes convinced that in order to save society it must be completely restructured along the lines of Islamic law while still using Western technology.

He also becomes convinced that this can only be accomplished through the use of an elite "vanguard" to lead a revolution against the established order. Qutb becomes a leader of the Muslim Brotherhood and, after being tortured in one of Nasser's jails, comes to believe that Western-influenced leaders can justly be killed for the sake of removing their corruption.

Qutb is executed in 1966, but he influences the future mentor of Osama bin Laden, Ayman al-Zawahiri, to start his own secret Islamist group. Inspired by the 1979 Iranian revolution, Zawahiri and his allies assassinate Egyptian president Anwar Al Sadat, in 1981, in hopes of starting their own revolution.

The revolution does not materialize. And Zawahiri comes to believe that the majority of Muslims have been corrupted not only by their Western-inspired leaders, but Muslims themselves have been affected by the disease of jahilliyah.

Thus both may be legitimate targets of violence if they do not join him. They continued to have the belief that a vanguard was necessary to rise up and overthrow the corrupt regime and replace it with a pure Islamist state.

At the same time in the United States, a group of disillusioned liberals, including Irving Kristol and Paul Wolfowitz, look to the political thinking of Leo Strauss after the perceived failure of President Johnson's "Great Society."

They come to the conclusion that the emphasis on individual liberty was the undoing of the plan. They envisioned restructuring America by uniting the American people against a common evil -- and set about creating a mythical enemy.

These factions, the Neo-Conservatives, came to power under the Reagan administration, with their allies Dick Cheney and Donald Rumsfeld, and work to unite the United States in FEAR of the Soviet Union.

The Neo-Conservatives allege that the Soviet Union is not following the terms of disarmament between the two countries. And with the investigation of "Team B," they accumulate a case to prove this with dubious evidence and methods. President Reagan is convinced nonetheless.
