Living for Outcomes and the "Yoga Sutras"

Ami Fox (foxpoweryoga.com); Wisdom Quarterly

I spent the summer re-reading the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali.

These are deep concepts that go far beyond the mat -- yet very practical, commonsense, and elegant.

Now as we ease into autumn, it seems that some of these concepts resonate more deeply. I have been getting hung up on my attachment to outcomes.

Let's face it. This world is all about outcomes: goals, objectives, focus. I am sucked into these frames. For my mental well being, it seems necessary to step away from being results-oriented and ease into a space where the process itself is my motivation for action.

For instance, when I teach a yoga class, I always want the class to go smoothly, for everyone to enjoy the pace, and delight in the presentation. That is not always the outcome. So it is hard to find motivation in the process.

Take working into a posture (asana), for example. It is common for us as Americans to want to look a certain way in a pose. And if it is not achieved, we are often disappointed and feel like a "yoga failure."

"It was the greatest leap ever taken. The speed of Hanuman's jump pulled blossoms and flowers into the air...they cheered" - Ramayana, retold by William Buck (yogajournal.com).

I have worked for years to achieve full Hanumasana. Yet at the end of the year, at the end of the decade, I am still so far from the floor that it is not what my ego would say is a "good" monkey pose splits.

I joke with my classes that there is no trophy in the back with someone doing the perfect monkey pose or downward dog. But I say this to remind myself. The postures are very intelligent, supporting liver, kidney, and endocrine function, as well as increasing flexibility and strength.

It is important to stay with the process not the aesthetics (or even the asceticism) of it, but rather the health benefits.

There is more to come concerning The Yoga Sutras. A conversation is a series of contemplation and utterances. Find more on my new blog.

"Family Guy" to premiere in theatres (free)

(Fan favorite "Road to Multiverse") America's No. 1 family enters its 10th season midnight on Thursday at AMC Century City 15 in LA and in New York, Chicago, Boston, Dallas...

Science confirms that laughter is good medicine, so here is a major dose of innovative animation. The Buddha was perhaps the only major religious figure frequently depicted as happy, jovial, and laughing -- and for good reason. Enough with the stiffness of austerity and onto the joy here and hereafter.

(LA Times) In celebration of the show’s 10th anniversary, the funny side of the FOX network is spotlighting the Griffin household -- Stewie, Brian, Peter (Seth MacFarlane), Lois, Chris, and Meg (Mila Kunis) -- with a 10-city, one-night-only, exclusive midnight viewing of an exclusive episode as well never-before-seen footage, trivia, and giveaways.

  • Also in: Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Minneapolis, New York, Philadelphia, Phoenix, and Seattle

Tickets for the Southern California event are free on a first-come, first-served basis and can be reserved at familyguyLA@gmail.com.

The new episode that will be screened is called “Lottery Fever,” which finds the Rhode Island family struggling to stay grounded after finding themselves holding a winning ticket. The especially subversive 2009 episode “Road to Multiverse” will also be screening, having been picked for the occasion by fans voting via Facebook. The screenings will also include a 22-minute bonus feature from the forthcoming “Family Guy” DVD, due on shelves on Dec.13, 2011.

Rupert Murdoch attacked with pie (cartoon)

Wisdom Quarterly

ENGLAND (July 19, 2011) - Multi-billionaire Rupert Murdoch was attacked by a protester wielding a shaving foam on paper plate pie as he gave evidence at the Culture Media and Sport committee on phone-hacking. His Yale graduate Chinese wife Wendi Deng [in pictures], who is often accused of being a gold digger and is 38 years his junior, was quick to retaliate and attack pie man attempting to take her husband down a peg. Murdoch is in the center of a British super-scandal revealing police corruption, phone hacking, media blackmail of politicians and others in public view. Murdoch is a hateful figure who owns Fox News and supports campaigns then, it is alleged, exerts undue influence on world politics, monetary policy, and the modern media landscape.

Murdoch gets pied while answering for his misdeeds ( )

Custard for Justice
Comedian Jonnie Marbles threw a custard [-like shaving foam] pie in Rupert Murdoch's face during the phone hacking hearing today.

The media tycoon's wife Wendi leaped to avenge the insult, first pushing the protester away then smacking the plate full of shaving cream over the demonstrator as he was led away by police officers.

Members of the audience reported that the protester said "You naughty billionaire" to Mr. Murdoch as he was carried out after the peaceful cream puff demonstration. See full video below.

FOX: "Not racist, but #1 with racists"

Why should anyone care about this case? Corporate crimes seem somehow nicer than individual acts. The reason this case is so important is that Murdoch and his empire rule political campaigns. Those who are [s]elected to serve are pressed to vote in favor of weakening laws aimed at protecting the public and its access to a fair and balanced media.

This is exactly what they do NOT get from FOX (so naturally they use it as a Newspeak slogan). Corporate malfeasance, invasion of privacy, police corruption...this is the least of it. Someone has already been "taken care of" for whistle blowing, and the scandal is only getting started.

And
David Cameron the Prime Minister is involved, too, taking direction on how to deal with the media from a former editor of Murdoch's recently defunct tabloid, News of the World, behind the phone hacking allegations.
